Nigeria Senate Wants Public Officers To Operate Foreign Accounts

A bill seeking to alter the constitution to allow public officers own and operate foreign bank accounts is currently being considered by the Senate. The Senate Bill number 347 sponsored by Senator Solomon Olamilekan was obtained by THE PUNCH, in Abuja, on Wednesday. Entitled, "An Act to Alter The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 To Permit Public Officers to Maintain or Operate a Bank Account In Any Country Outside Nigeria; And For Related Matters," the bill seeks to alter a part of the fifth schedule of the constitution. In an explanatory memorandum attached to it, the sponsor of the bill said, "This bill seeks to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, in order to delete the provision in the Code of Conduct for public officers which forbids them from operating a bank account in a bank outside Nigeria. Alan Ruschel, a survivor of the Chapcoense air disaster, has been discharged from hospital 18 days after the tragic crash which killed 19 of his team-mates. The Brazilian left back was seen leaving the Unimed hospital in Chapeco on Friday to cheers and applause from a waiting crowd, stepping out of his wheelchair before jumping into a car to depart in a clip uploaded by Alexandre Lozetti. Ruschel is one of just six survivors of the plane crash that killed 71 people in Colombia last month – including most of the Chapecoense squad and staff. Having been transferred back to Brazil earlier in the week, Ruschel has now been deemed well enough to leave the hospital after recovering from a spinal cord injury. He is expected to continue to require physiotherapy treatment at home

Less than two weeks to Christmas, a man and at least five of his children all of school age were a few hours ago crushed by an overspeeding Toyota Picnic bus, reports an eye-witness. According to reports, the accident which occurred near Taraku, Benue State, has sparked a reprisal with a mob blocking the Makurdi-Otukpo road at the accident spot. The man was said to be taking his wards home from school when the vehicle knocked them down.

The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) on Friday lauded the Federal Government’s plans to lift foreign exchange restriction on 41 imported items. Mr Stanley Ezenga, the National Publicity Secretary of the association, gave the commendation in an interview with newsmen in Lagos. The Federal Government had indicated its readiness to lift the forex ban it placed on some 41 items in 2015. Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun, had in the 2017 Fiscal Policy Roadmap, said Federal Government “will replace administrative measures on list of 41 items with fiscal measures to reduce demand pressure in the parallel market. Ezenga said that the plan would boost importation activities at the nation’s ports. Recession Bites Harder as November Allocation Decline By N33bn

The revenue available for sharing by Nigeria’s federal, states and local governments in November declined by N33.1 billion. Thus, N386.9 billion was distributed to all tiers of government compared to the N420 billion shared in October. The minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, represented by the Accountant-General of the Federation,Mr Idris Ahmed on Thursday in Abuja, attributed the decline to the decrease in crude oil export by 0.34 million barrels per day even though the average price of crude oil increased from 46.54 dollars to 47.08 dollars per barrel in November. Giving a breakdown of how the N386.9 billion revenue for the month was generated, Adeosun said N206.44 was from the distributable Statutory Revenue of the month. The sum of N6.33 billion was refunded by the NNPC to the Federation, N66 billion from the Excess Petroleum Profit Tax account, exchange gain of N38.85 billion and Value Added Tax, N75.6 billion. Forty-five year old Mark Friday, has been arrested for allegedly beating his wife to a coma because she allegedly using the money meant for their children’s school fees to invest in the MMM Ponzi scheme.
